Reflecting the racial politics of the 1960s. It is a melodrama by Charlton Heston. Described as an iconic, wildly entertaining adaptation of the 1963 novel by Pierre Boulle (who also wrote The Bridge Over the River Kwai, on which the similarly titled film was based). Three American astronauts land on a strange planet, where speaking apes have taken over society.
This original made huge leaps in the world of cinema makeup, winning an honorary Oscar for makeup artist John Chambers, and was also nominated for Best Costume Design and Jerry Goldsmith’s score. The movie is, simply, an American classic.
