Even thought these designs are to cover an adult novel such as 'To kill a mocking bird' I think the style would also work well to cover a child directed book. The dark silhouette adds a dark tone, but the exaggerated 'cartoon' style shapes add a a fictional sense.
All these covers set the same sort of tone I want to create for the James and the giant peach cover.
