Previous penguin award winners

I have posted the winning designs from the 2010 awards, to design a cover for the novel 'Perfume'. These demonstrated the standard of design penguin will be looking for and therefor the level of design I will aim to work at.
I think both designs are grate! However I thought the runner up should have won first place. The texture of the hair within the font appears very realistic. The hair and blood red colour sum up the main concept of the novel very well.
The design that actually won first place has had a high attention to illustrative detail and effectively communicates the century the novel was set in. Professional use of colour and layout as well.

The development for the perfume jacket design

"My concept is based on creating mixed feelings. The title lettering looks nice at first sight but after taking a closer look the reader can see it is made of hair. Beautiful, long and nicely scented hair is undoubtedly a feature of a woman. If it is cut, it immediately brings the thought that something bad has happened to her. By using real hair I wanted to emphasise the human aspect in a subtle way and it links to the story, the pursuit of the perfect scent - innocence. The lettering style is inspired by eighteenth-century French alphabets." DESIGNER
